SUMMARY:Space between us
DESCRIPTION:A collaborative performance by Noriko Whitfield and Edra Soto \nUsing crystal singing bowls\, sound artist Noriko Whitfield will perform an immersive sound piece in collaboration with ICA San Diego Artist in Residence Edra Soto. As Whitfield’s bowls sing\, Soto will share portions of a letter dedicated to her mother–an offering to fill the space between the two bodies Soto references in her abstract painting series\, “Dos Cuerpos” currently on view at ICA North. “Dos Cuerpos” distills how a place\, nation\, or a culture imprints itself upon us\, grounding us and growing with us no matter where we are. Working in her studio\, Soto conducts imaginary conversations while crafting compositions of fragments of paper in order to generate each visual arrangement. These splintered visualizations are reminiscent of references including Caribbean petroglyphs and secret languages; communicative gestures across time that touch us while challenging our comprehension. Whitfield’s sound work amplifies the emotional journey that grief tends to set upon us. \nWhitfield has specialized in various forms of healing arts for over 15 years. Her recent focus is on deepening the mind-body connection by incorporating body movements and sound\, and her  mission is to help  others live to their full potential. Whitfield  has performed at the Mingei International Museum and at Jerwood Arts in London. She is currently conducting a–n ongoing sound meditation and body movement series at California Center for the Arts\, Escondido. She is also a coach and Grief Recovery Method Specialist. During her sound therapy\, Whitfield creates a sense of space\, calming the nervous system for emotional well-being and facilitating connection to  the unconscious mind. She lives in Encinitas\,California. \nEdra Soto is a Puerto-Rican born artist\, curator\, educator\, and co-director of the outdoor project space\, The Franklin in Chicago\, IL. Soto instigates meaningful\, relevant\, and often difficult conversations surrounding socioeconomic and cultural oppression\, erasure of history\, and loss of cultural knowledge. Growing up in Puerto Rico\, and now immersed in her Chicago community\, Soto’s work has evolved to raise questions about constructed social orders\, diasporic identity\, and the legacy of colonialism. Soto has exhibited extensively at venues including El Museo del Barrio (NY)\, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago (IL) and the Whitney Museum of American Art (NY). She has been awarded the Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship\, the Illinois Arts Council Agency Fellowship\, the inaugural Foundwork Artist Prize\, the MacArthur Foundation’s International Connections Fund\, the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant and the Bemis Center’s Ree Kaneko Award among others. Soto holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree from Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico. The artist lives and works in Chicago. \nRSVP to the event here!  \n*Edra Soto\, “Dos Cuerpos”\, Installation view. ICA San Diego. 2023. Photo by Phillip Scholz Rittermann.

In a sudden family move\, the brothers moved to The United States in 1972\, going from a traditional catholic school to a small California beach Town. They both attended California State University at Long Beach\, Jamex got a BFA in Sculpture in 1983\, while Einar decided against the utility of an art degree. Currently the brothers live and work on both sides of the border\, The Guadalupe Valley in Baja California\, México\, and San Diego\, California. The complexities of the immigrant experience and contradicting bicultural identities\, as well as their current life and practice on both sides of border\, inform their narrative and aesthetics. \nThe Brothers have been collaborating in earnest since the 1990’s. Over the years they have developed their signature style featuring mix media work with blown glass sculpture and installation art. Their pieces represent a multifaceted view of life that reflects a complex and humorous aesthetic that could be seen as multi-layered baroque. Their approach is additive\, constantly combining material and meaning. Influences range from religious iconography to German expressionism while also paying homage to Mexican vernacular arts and pre-Columbian art. In the last 15 years they have been creating photomural installations and using Lenticular printing as a major part of their repertoire. They have won The USA Artists Fellowship award\, The Louis Comfort Tiffany Award\, The Joan Mitchell Foundation Award\, and The San Diego Art Prize\,. \nDr. Hugh M. Davies\nDirector Emeritus\nMuseum of Contemporary Art San Diego\nHugh M. Davies is recognized internationally as a scholar in the field of contemporary and modern art. Davies served from 1983 to 2016 as director of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego\, and was named Director Emeritus by the museum’s trustees in 2016. While directing artistic and administrative activities of MCASD\, Davies curated or co-curated numerous exhibitions including: Phenomenal: California Light\, Space\, Surface (2011-2012)\, Robert Irwin: Primaries and Secondaries (2007)\, Francis Bacon: The Papal Portraits of 1953 (1999)\, and William Kentridge: Weighing…and Wanting (1998). Davies was one of six co-curators who organized the Biennial 2000 at the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York\, and in 1976 he served as Director of the U.S. Exhibition at the 37th Venice Biennale. From 1975 to 1983 he was the founding director of the University Museum of Contemporary Art (formerly the University Gallery) at the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst\, and from 1984 through 2016\, he was a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors\, a Trustee from 1994-2001\, and President from 1997-1998. \nDavies is currently a member of the Francis Bacon Authentication Committee\, which published the artist’s Catalogue Raisonne in 2016. His doctoral dissertation on Francis Bacon was later expanded and published by Garland Press\, and he has subsequently published extensively on Bacon’s work. Davies received his A.B.\, summa cum laude\, (1970)\, M.F.A. (1972)\, and Ph.D. (1976) from the Department of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University. \n  \n-While the ICA San Diego celebrates and supports freedom of artistic expression\, we would like to be sensitive to those visitors with differing comfort levels. With that in mind\, we’d like you to know that this exhibition contains depictions of adult content including nudity and allusions to violence.

SUMMARY:Edra Soto and Jezabeth Roca Gonzalez in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The Hill Street Country Club and ICA San Diego invite you to a conversation between artists Jezebeth Roca Gonzalez and Edra Soto. Despite their geographic and stylistic differences\, both Gonzalez and Soto make use of Puerto Rico’s vernacular architecture and intimate scenes of domestic life to deepen and extend their connection to the island. \nThe coincidence of their exhibitions in San Diego County provides an opportunity for an intergenerational exchange about art as a vehicle for communication\, connection\, and care across the Puerto Rican diaspora and beyond. \nRSVP to the event here!  \n  \n \n  \n  \n*Edra Soto: Graft\, 2019.
