SUMMARY:C You Saturday! - February 2026
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at ICA San Diego / Central on Saturday\, February 21\, for the opening of Ruben Ulises Rodriguez Montoya: In the Garden of Earthly Delights: I Bend to Paradise. \nThis free art event in San Diego is part of ICA’s commitment to reduce barriers to contemporary art in our community.\nPlease join us on Saturday\, February 21 from 4 to 7pm for the opening reception of Ruben Ulises Rodriguez Montoya: In the Garden of Earthly Delights: I Bend to Paradise at ICA San Diego / Central. This exhibition\, Rodriguez Montoya’s first solo museum show in California\, is an immersive project that brings Nahuatl cosmology into deep space. Drawing from folklore\, border politics\, popular culture\, and science fiction\, Rodriguez Montoya’s exhibition relays the story of a stowaway vampire adrift on the wreckage of a spaceship meant to ferry the privileged into the future. His sculptures and installations\, made from disused materials and silicone\, trace the vampire’s journey from wholeness to rupture and back again\, mirroring the divisiveness\, fear\, and longing that shape our contemporary moment.  \nVisitors are invited to attend Bloodsuckers: Queering the Monstrous Other\, a panel discussion considering the vampire as a symbol of both queer and migrant resistance in the face of persecution. Panelists include exhibiting artist Ruben Ulises Rodriguez Montoya; Dr. Brenda Lara\, interdisciplinary theorist and professor at San Diego State University; and Los Angeles-based writer and artist Christal Pérez. \nGuests will also enjoy a selection of crafted cocktails\, some light music\, and an opportunity to create art in our Education Hub.  \n4 PM – 6:30 PM | Family Friendly Activity: HUB \nVisitors will have the opportunity to drop-in and create an all-ages art activity in our Education Hub inside the gallery.  \n5:00 – 6:00 PM | Bloodsuckers: Queering the Monstrous Other Panel Discussion \nJoin us for a panel discussion in the Mingei Theatre where local educators and artists focused on queer vampire theory and the momentum behind Ruben Montoya’s In the Garden of Earthly Delights: I Bend to Paradise.  \n4 PM – 7 PM | Food\, Drinks and Socializing  \nSocialize and explore the exhibition with delicious tacos plates by Bety’s Tacos and crafted cocktails available for purchase. Currently pursuing an MFA in Visual Arts\, Carter is furthering her material exploration into the concept of bodies rooted in spaces and places rooted in bodies.\n\n\nNykelle DeVivo\, MFA\, University of California\, San Diego: DeVivo is a Portland based visual artist working with light through various mediums to navigate the crossroads between the physical world and that of their ancestors.\n\n\nAdele Gaburo\, BA\, San Diego State University: Although Gaburo works with a variety of materials in her mixed media sculpture practice\, silicone and fabric are her most loved for their ability to emulate the human body.  Her work addresses body dysmorphic disorder\, and the empty\, shameful\, and all-consuming feelings of otherness that can be associated with it.\n\n\nEmily Greenberg\, MFA\, University of California\, San Diego: Greenberg is an artist\, filmmaker\, writer\, editor\, and educator living in San Diego. Her artworks and films have been shown at Festival ECRÃ\, Videobardo\, Smack Mellon\, SIGGRAPH\, ISEA\, the Knockdown Center\, Columbus International Film & Animation Festival\, Digerati Emergent Media Festival\, and Screener Short Films\, and her writing has appeared in the Iowa Review\, McSweeney’s\, Electric Literature\, Michigan Quarterly Review\, Witness\, Santa Monica Review\, and Chicago Quarterly Review.\n\n\nNanzi Muro\, MFA\, San Diego State University: Muro is an interdisciplinary Fronteriza artivist based in San Diego. Born in Los Angeles\, she grew up along the San Diego/Tijuana border\, embracing her dual identity as both American and Mexican. Being a first-generation daughter to parents with P’urepecha and Mayan ancestry from Mexico and El Salvador\, Rosado’s work is influenced by the adaptations of her cultural traditions in Southern California.\n\n  \nRSVP to C You Saturday!\nICA San Diego / Central\n1439 El Prado\, San Diego\, CA 92101\nJune 21\, 2025\n4:00 – 7:00 PM\n__________________________\n  \nTo reduce barriers to contemporary art\, these events and exhibitions are free of charge. \nICA San Diego exhibition support provided by: \n \n  \n*ICA members receive free drink tickets. \nGet notified of more free art events in San Diego: Join our email list!

SUMMARY:C You Saturday! - November 2024
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at ICA San Diego / Central on Saturday\, November 23 in celebration of Nathalie Miebach’s Restless Waters. \n\nThis free art event in San Diego is part of ICA’s commitment to reduce barriers to contemporary art in our community.\n4 PM – 6PM | All Ages Art-Making \n5:30 PM – 6:30PM | Collaborative Performance by Project [BLANK] \nIn 2009\, Nathalie Miebach began the Weather Score Project\, in which her own preparatory drawings function as musical scores that are translated into compositions by contemporary composers. As Miebach’s focus shifted from a scientific understanding of climate change to an experiential interpretation\, musical notation has offered an alternative expressive lens for her narratives. Working in the two-dimensional score format helps Miebach sort through and refine her data before she begins the sculptural process. From here\, Miebach moves back and forth between drawing\, research\, and construction until the artwork is complete. \nWorking collaboratively with composers from all over the world\, Miebach has produced 16 compositions with 12 composers that have been performed at festivals\, museums\, galleries\, and universities.  \nAs part of this exhibition\, Miebach is collaborating with composer Natalia Merlano-Gomez and local experimental music organization Project [BLANK] to produce an immersive performance to take place at ICA Central. This event includes the premiere of a new composition based on Restless Rivers\, a sculpture created specifically for this exhibition. This sculpture and its accompanying score explore our changing relationship to water as both a life-sustaining and destructive force. Water\, in the form of rain\, tides\, atmospheric rivers\, and floods is changing how and where we live\, where we find safety\, and how we think of home. \nThe performance is presented by Getty’s PST ART Weekend: San Diego & La Jolla\, which features a weekend of events that include neighboring institutions within Balboa Park. \nNote: Gallery lights will be dimmed for this performance. \n4 PM – 7 PM | View Exhibitions and Socializing  \nBrowse the exhibitions\, enjoy drinks for purchase\, and visit our Membership table! \nWe hope to C you there! \nICA San Diego / Central\n1439 El Prado\, San Diego\, CA 92101\nSaturday\, November 23\, 2024\n4:00 – 7:00 PM\n__________________________\nTo reduce barriers to contemporary art\, these events and exhibitions are free of charge. \nThese exhibitions are supported by the Linda Brandes Foundation.\nICA San Diego Exhibition Support Provided by the City of San Diego\, Buttgenbach Foundation\, and the Tippett Foundation. \nRSVP to attend C You Saturday!\n  \nICA members receive free drink tickets. \nGet notified of more free art events in San Diego: Join our email list!
