SUMMARY:C You Saturday! - January 2025
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at ICA San Diego / North on Saturday\, January 18 for the opening of Ethan Chan & David Peña: Heavy as Ghosts. \n \nThis free art event in San Diego is part of ICA’s commitment to reduce barriers to contemporary art in our community.\n4 PM – 6:30 PM | All-Ages Art Making   \nJoin us at ICA San Diego North Campus for this month’s C You Saturday. Create a collage inspired by the materials and forms used by Artists in Residence\, David Peña and Ethan Chan. Reflect your unique perspective on healing through layered textures and meaningful compositions of everyday objects. \n4:00 – 5:00 pm | Performance by Ethan Chan \nIn this durational performance piece by Ethan Chan\, Ethan replicates the setting where his father spends his time when he’s unable to go to work. Ethan dresses up in his father’s daily at-home attire and traps himself in a space with nothing but his dad’s favorite food\, a microwave\, and a television\, set to change channels every 10 seconds. In this space\, the artist does not communicate with anyone or leave the room\, and his only activities are sitting\, eating\, and watching TV.  \nThinking about the act of doomscrolling as a modern outlet for loneliness and boredom\, a comparison can be drawn to the earlier act of channel-surfing. Constantly flicking through TV channels every few seconds for long periods of time results in both time passing and little to no entertainment or information being absorbed. As a kid\, Ethan would sit with his dad (who identifies as a workaholic) on his days off at home while he channel-surfed. When Ethan once asked him why he did that for hours on end\, he responded by saying\, “what else am I going to do?”. \n5:00 – 6:00 PM | Panel Discussion feat. David Peña and Guests  \nMapping Loss: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Grief and Healing Panel with David Peña\, Mira Masukawa\, and Selena Jong. \nJoin exhibiting artist David Peña for a special panel discussion on grief and general healing. Peña will be joined by Mira Masukawa of San Diego Grief Counseling and California Grief Therapy Center Inc.\, and Selena Jong\, certified death doula. \nDavid Peña: David Peña is a visual artist whose work considers resilience in the face of loss and grief\, and explores how we carry on links to ancestral cultures even after our elders\, our links to those cultures\, have passed on. In his practice\, he engages questions of generational healing and care through his Mexican-American identity. In the exhibition of his work at ICA\, David focuses on the life of his abuelo Encarnación\, a welder for NASSCO (National Steel and Shipbuilding Company) in Barrio Logan\, San Diego\, who welded the front yard fence to their family home. \nMira Masukawa: Mira Masukawa is a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist\, the founder of San Diego Grief Counseling\, and leader of California Grief Therapy Center Inc. Her work focuses on grief\, complicated grief\, trauma\, anxiety\, and caregiver fatigue. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy\, with research focused on the role of rituals and therapy in healing grief. Mira’s accomplishments include being featured on CBS San Diego News during Hispanic Heritage Month\, as well as being included in Facebook’s Hall of Her as one of twelve women celebrated for Women’s History Month. \nSelena Jong: Selena Jong is a certified death doula\, also known as an end-of-life guide. Death doulas are non-medical professionals who provide holistic support to individuals and their loved ones during the dying process. Death doulas offer compassionate care and guidance to individuals and their care circles as they navigate end of life\, and work alongside medical professionals\, hospice teams\, and caregivers to ensure the individual’s physical\, emotional\, and spiritual needs are met during their end of life journey. Selena is also a hospice volunteer\, sits bedside with the 11th Hour program at Sharp Grossmont Hospital and hosts a monthly Death Cafe discussion group. \n6:00 – 7:00 PM | Music by Guest DJ \nMusic selected by David Peña inspired by his exhibition. \n4 PM – 7 PM | Food\, Drinks and Socializing \nWe hope to C you there! \nICA San Diego / North\n1578 El Camino Real\, Encinitas\, CA 92024\nSaturday\, January 18\, 2025\n4:00 – 7:00 PM\n__________________________\nTo reduce barriers to contemporary art\, these events and exhibitions are free of charge. \nICA San Diego exhibition support provided by: \n \nRSVP to attend C You Saturday!\n  \nICA members receive free drink tickets. \nGet notified of more free art events in San Diego: Join our email list!

Unleash your creativity while exploring how art can bring science to life! \n5:00 – 6:00 PM | Panel discussion w/Melissa Walter  \nJoin exhibiting artist Melissa Walter for a special panel discussion on the role of DNA identification technology within the criminal justice system. Walter will be joined by Megan Baca\, from California Innocence Advocates; Mehul Anjaria\, of MBA DNA Consulting; Mike Semanchik\, of  The Innocence Center; and Luis Vargas\, a life coach with the Anti Recidivism Coalition. \nMegan Baca\, California Innocence Advocades\nSince 2017\, Megan Baca has helped to free ten individuals who were wrongfully convicted of crimes they did not commit and who cumulatively spent nearly 250 years in prison. Prior to founding California Innocence Advocates\, Megan worked as the Assistant Legal Director and Director of Investigations at Loyola Project for the Innocent (LPI).  Before serving as a director at LPI\, Megan served as a post-conviction investigator in 2017 and went on to become a staff attorney in 2018.  There\, Megan trained and supervised scores of law students and taught classes on wrongful conviction\, and post-conviction investigation and litigation. \nMehul Anjaria\, MBA DNA Consulting\nIn his 28-year forensic science career Mehul B. Anjaria has seen the front lines of all sides of the criminal justice system and now enjoys the challenge of bridging science and law. He is a member of the Panel of Expert Witnesses of the County of Los Angeles Superior Court. In 2009 he founded MBA DNA Consulting\, LLC to assist criminal defense/civil attorneys and Pro Per inmates struggling with complicated forensic DNA issues in their cases. His previous experience includes serving as a DNA Technical Leader in a law enforcement crime laboratory and co-founding and directing the first DNA laboratory in California accredited under ISO/IEC standards. In 2017 he began working as a consultant on post-conviction cases. \nMike Semanchik\, The Innocence Center\nMichael Semanchik is the Executive Director of The Innocence Center (TIC)\, a national organization focused on freeing people who were wrongfully convicted\, raising awareness about these cases\, and supporting those who have been exonerated. Throughout his career\, he has helped free 12 innocent people who together spent more than 200 years in prison for crimes they didn’t commit. One of his most notable cases was helping exonerate NFL player Brian Banks\, which earned him the Attorney of the Year award from California Lawyer Magazine in 2013. Michael has also spoken at schools and appeared in the media to discuss his work dozens of times. He is from Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. \nLuis Vargas\, Anti Recidivism Coalition\nLuis Lorenzo Vargas is a life coach with the Anti Recidivism Coalition of Los Angeles conducting workshops at the California Men’s Colony State Prison in San Luis Obispo. He works to empower incarcerated individuals to become better people and find meaning in their life\, and to change the culture inside of prison. Luis is a certified Alcohol Drug Services Specialist and holds an AA in Social and Behavioral Sciences\, Math and Science\, and Arts and Humanities.
