About
San Diego-based artist Melissa Walter (b.1976, Providence, RI) uses abstraction to translate complex scientific concepts into intimate and accessible visual experiences. Alongside works on paper, Plexus introduces ceramic sculpture and video into Walter’s practice as she continues her investigations into DNA identification technology and its application to criminal and civil laws. Walter packs a wealth of information into highly detailed yet restrained compositions that illuminate the profound effects that DNA analysis can have on increasing equity in the American criminal justice system.
In addition to the exhibition, Melissa Walter will moderate a panel discussion on October 19 on the role of DNA identification technology within the criminal justice system. Panelists include representatives from California Innocence Advocates, MBA DNA Consulting, and The Innocence Center.
