About the teacher

Hello friends! My name is Max Anderson. I am 24 years of age and live in Encinitas, CA. I am currently a student at Mira Costa Community College studying graphic design. I have been doing pottery for about 8 years now. I took my first ceramics class in high school at San Dieguito Academy. I fell in love with clay, specifically working on the pottery wheel, in an instant. Some of the skills I have learned as a potter are patience, flexibility, and challenging myself to try new things. I will be teaching the beginner/intermediate wheel throwing class here at ICA.

Description

In this handbuilding clay class we’ll explore pattern and template making.  We’ll shape slab forms and use templates for repeatability, creating functional wares.  We’ll also create bisqueware stamps to press patterns into the surface to accentuate these forms.

About the teacher
I was first introduced to ceramics by an Anthropologist in Mexico City when I was 16. I signed up for a clay class which I thought would involve making and firing ceramics but instead it focused on grinding wild clay under the sun in order to prepare the material and primitive hand-building techniques. Despite all this and not having any kilns to fire the pieces it somehow ignited my interest. It wasn’t until I moved to California a year later that I was introduced to stoneware and porcelain and ceramics turned into a passion. I devoted my university final project to a ceramics solo exhibit and went on to a ceramics program in Valencia, Spain afterwards. Throughout the years I have continued exploring a fusion of primitive techniques with refined materials which I find fascinating.
