What is the ICA Sculpture Trail?

The Sculpture Trail at ICA North is a growing collection of contemporary outdoor sculpture that unfolds across our six-acre property, offering moments of discovery, delight, and respite within our unique coastal environment. It is ICA San Diego’s only permanent art collection.

Our collection focuses on artwork that challenges traditional notions of sculpture whether through a resistance to permanence, monumentality, or through conceptual or physical engagement. Because of this, artworks on the trail often exist in various states of being: some are growing, like Greg Ito’s The Summit, or decaying, like rafa esparza’s tlatoa. Additionally we prioritize artwork that engages directly with our surrounding environment, and relates to the experiences of our local communities.

Since 2019, the Sculpture Trail has grown from five sculptures and installations to 15 works, with new acquisitions being considered on a regular basis.

When and How can I Access the Trail?

The Sculpture Trail at ICA North is accessible to the public from 9a to 5p most Saturdays and Sundays. We are closed on federal holidays and may close for the occasional private event. Please check our website prior to visiting.

Trail access is self-guided, which means you can walk the trail on your own during the posted trail open hours. There will not be ICA staff members present on the trail, but there will be staff in the Lower Pavilion if you need assistance.
